As we enjoy the last of our tomatoes it’s time t

As we enjoy the last of our tomatoes it’s time to think about saving seed for next year.

Only choose from healthy plants. Leave in your fruit bowl for a week until very ripe and soft.
Cut open and squeeze the flesh and seeds out into a glass. I add a little water. Leave for 24 hours to ferment. This step removes the germination inhibiting gel on seed and kills seed-borne diseases.
Wash in a sieve.
Spread on paper towel to dry. Doesn’t matter if bits of flesh too.
When you plant next year just cut the paper towel up.
Use this method for cucumber too.
Happy seed saving.

If you know us well or follow us you will know we are obsessed with geese. They are our organic farm workers. Eating grass and fertilising our vineyards and orchards. A perfectly integrated permaculture system. The most important practice we have to control kikuyu grass on our certified biodynamic farm.
We have a respectful and fun arrangement. We keep the flock safe from foxes with fencing. We provide soaks for swimming, rotate grazing areas and a bucket of wheat a day. They are always so pleased to see us.

One year ago. It’s so interesting to look back at farm photos. Compare the years and see what’s working.

We planted this vineyard in 2001.
Just the two of us with a young family, sons Max & Ned, playing in the dirt. Dan was still in a pram.

The new plantings of Vermentino vines are still alive due to Jamie’s perseverance, watering by hand over summer.

Geese have eliminated kikuyu in some parts of the vineyard but this
is ongoing.
Biodynamic compost tea (500) applied over the last 18 years has built structure in our soil.

Vineyard goals - to get geese out in time to get green cover over soil,
to apply farm made compost to old vines. To nurture our new vineyards of Sciacarello, Malbec and Chardonnay. Hopefully first vintage of new varieties in 2026.

Bana grass or Elephant grass is a favourite Permac

Bana grass or Elephant grass is a favourite Permaculture - Permanent Agriculture, fodder plant on our farm. Native to Uganda.
It’s still warm and dry on our farm but the Bana grass thrives and provides a wind break in our market garden, and a welcome feed for our cows and pigs. It’s full of nutrients and up to 14% protein.
Grows well in our climate and thrives with extra watering. Very fast growing, if watered. Up to a metre in 6 weeks after cutting down. Propagate from stems in Spring.
Children staying in our accommodation love hand feeding the cows with a piece of Bana.

Recipe 3 cups of plain organic flour 1.5 cups of h

Recipe
3 cups of plain organic flour
1.5 cups of honey
1 cup of almonds

Prepare a baking tray with baking paper or grease.
Mix honey into flour. Use your hands to fully mix.
Add almonds.
Shape dough into 2 equal pieces. Roll into logs and then squash into flat loafs about 2cm thick.
Bake at 170 C for about 1 hour.
If getting too brown turn oven down.
Remove from oven. Wait 10 minutes until cool enough to cut.
Cut into slices. Don”t leave too long or you cannot cut into slices.
Once cooled completely the biscuits set quite hard.
Amazing dipped into espresso. Enjoy!

More on oak trees. They are tough and easy to grow from an acorn. The acorns can be collected and stored as pig food. They can survive and grow with just winter rainfall. The trees provide shade and fire protection in summer, and mulch for our soil in Autumn. Second photo - oaks dry grown, on right. Avocados irrigated, on left. Fast growing (these ones about 8 years old). Good timber and firewood.
