Netted orchard from above.
The nylon netting lasts about 15 years with lots of effort fixing holes from trees that grow faster than Jamie can prune and wild animals that nibble their way in.
The end of this net was a winter storm. We’ve decided to do it differently this time. Using aviary wire. We’ll let you know how it goes.

Any one who has driven past our vineyard, stayed or visited knows we love geese. The most important animal in our farming systems. The challenges of organic farming are all overcome with geese and fox proof fencing.
For 15 years we’ve been trialling and observing. This year they mated late and are still hatching goslings in mid October.
Nature is amazing. A sign Spring is normal to late. A big relief for all farmers in this area.
Last year every gosling was born by the beginning of September. The earliest we’ve ever seen.
It was the driest hottest summer in our area for 800 years (according to the Nature Conservation talk).
Early meant the goslings had enough grass to eat and grew strong before the grass became brown and parched.

Australorp hens are very good mothers. Because she is in a safe area with no outside access the mother is limited in what she can forage for her chicks. Chicks need high protein food to grow. I feed them cooked egg, worms and castings from our worm farm and kikuyu and silverbeet to get them used to greens. Combined with some fermented (soaked) organic grain. This provides all the protein the chicks need to thrive and grow strong.

It’s time to start watering your garlic if you are in Perth or the South West.
We all like consistency. A little water every day is essential until the bulbs have formed proper individual cloves. Inconsistent watering will cause your garlic to think the growing season is over or even to start again and resprout (if it rains) or “broomstick”. Broom sticking is when the newly formed individual cloves sprout new leaves and grow extra cloves. The whole bulb doesn’t have its protective outer skin and the extra cloves are small as they don’t have time to grow large.
Still usable but not good for drying or for seed garlic.
We usually stop watering in late November/early December as soon as the scapes appear and leaves start yellowing. Then we pick about 2-3 weeks later.

As you can see above we mulch our garlic thickly with mulch. This means we hardly have to weed. Plus moisture is keep in the soil.

We’ll post more tips on harvesting and storing, in December.

In between seasons we grow Chilacoyote. It’s a perennial climbing squash that you can start growing from seed in winter.
The squash above can keep and be used as a vege filler.
We fry up, add to stews and curries. Best if picked small (immature) like a zucchini and use like zucchini. Not much nutrition either - just like a zucchini. Mainly carbohydrates. But sometimes we like some veg with our mainly meat diet.
Our pigs like them too.
It’s pretty resilient, high yielding and doesn’t need much water. A good addition to any vegetable garden if you have a spare wall for it to sprawl.

Today is very cool and wet. A good day to sort my tomato seeds and dream of a sunny day soon to seed them in soil blocks.
What is your favourite tomato? Mine is still Banana Legs (yellow above). High yielding and disease resistant. Sweet taste. Being yellow birds don’t find them as much. I’ve been keeping this seed for years but available @edenseedsau

Spring awakening. Longer days and a little sun are a turn on for the caper plants. The new soft leaves are so pretty up close.
In November they will be branches starting to grow flower buds, the capers. A delicacy enjoyed by our family and loyal customers. The smallest but most expensive crop we grow. A micro farming business.

Market garden update. The garlic is growing well

Market garden update. The garlic is growing well with its thick wood chip mulch protecting it from weeds. Beetroot, carrots and radish all being harvested for family meals. Our tip is to get these seeds in with the first good Winter rains while the soil is still warm. We direct seed all these together. Consistent weeding helps.
Lots of silverbeet and celery, thriving in the cool. Otherwise the garden is covered in weeds and cover crops. A time to rest the garden and dedicate our time to prune the vineyard.
Jamie has been preparing for Spring planting slashing with a Balinese sickle. Piling on the beds to break down. Soon we’ll plant potatoes and pumpkins straight into these beds. Other beds have been slashed and covered with silage tarpaulins to solarise and break down the seed bank. It works well but a practice we are trying to move away from. Plastic isn’t good in any system.
The next few weeks we’ll be soil blocking and growing seeds for seedlings. We start this in September. This timing works for us as we take a break in August. We like Eden Seeds Select Organic for certified organic seeds.

Djilba, the Wadandi season of conception. Each August the geese start their once a year breeding season. Lots of late night noise and fights between the young males for the females. The older ones have it sorted as they pair for life. Nests are made and eggs laid each day. When they have about ten eggs they start their thirty day incubation sitting period, with the males on hand to guard. It’s all very busy and interesting to observe.
This is also when they can get quite aggressive if you get too near a nest or near new born goslings.
Many people share their childhood stories, with us, about being chased by a goose and being cautious ever since. We get it.

This is a favourite photo taken by @francesandrijich in our vineyard when we needed to finish pruning right where a nest was being made.

As the days are getting longer we are now in the Wadandi season of Djilba. The season of conception.
Here is Jamie finishing the last of the vineyard pruning while the geese are starting to pair, mate in the water holes and make nests to lay eggs. Geese are quite different to chickens or ducks and only lay eggs once a year.
The geese are an important part of our Biodynamic farming system. Eating the grass under the vines while they are dormant. They eliminate Kikuyu, control weevils and snails plus fertilise naturally.
